Do these symptoms sound familiar?
Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear of the discs and joints in your neck. As they change, they can press on nearby nerves. Common signs include:
Neck pain and stiffness that gets worse when you move, or after sitting or standing for a long time.
Radiating pain or numbness that travels into the shoulders, arms or hands.
Weakness or poor coordination in the arms or hands, such as a weaker grip.
Headaches that start at the base of the skull or are felt behind the eyes.
Tingling or “pins and needles” in the arms, hands or fingers.
Root causes
What causes cervical spondylosis?
Most cases build up slowly over years. Knowing which factors apply to you helps us plan the right treatment.
Age-related changes
With age, spinal discs lose water and elasticity and become thinner, which makes them more prone to wear.
Repetitive stress
Long hours at a computer, looking down at a phone, or repeated heavy lifting can speed up wear in the neck.
Neck injuries
Past trauma, such as whiplash from a road accident or a sports injury, raises the risk later in life.
Genetic factors
Some people are more likely to develop it, especially if close family members have had spine problems.
How we treat it
Non-surgical treatment options
Most people with cervical spondylosis improve with conservative care. After examining you, we build a plan around your cause and severity, combining options where needed.
Physiotherapy
Guided stretching and strengthening for the neck and upper back to ease stiffness and take pressure off nerves.
Learn morePosture & ergonomic correction
Practical changes to how you sit, work, sleep and use your phone, so everyday habits stop re-triggering pain.
Medication for flare-ups
Short courses of pain relief or muscle relaxants, prescribed by your doctor, to calm a painful episode.
Targeted pain-relief injections
DSCB, nerve-block or epidural injections for severe nerve pain that has not settled with other care. See them explained in the videos below.
PRP therapy
Platelet-rich plasma from your own blood, considered for selected patients to support natural tissue healing.
Learn moreOzone therapy
A minimally invasive injection option for certain disc-related cases, used only where your specialist feels it fits.

Look after your neck
Everyday habits that ease neck strain
Small changes make a real difference alongside treatment. Your physiotherapist will tailor these to you.
Raise your screen
Keep the top of your monitor at eye level so your head isn't tilted forward all day.
Take regular breaks
Stand up, roll your shoulders and gently move your neck every 30–45 minutes.
Sleep with support
Use a pillow that keeps your neck in line with your spine, and avoid sleeping on your stomach.
Lift your phone
Bring your phone up to eye level instead of bending your head down to look at it.
Common questions
Cervical spondylosis: frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what patients usually ask before their first visit.
What is cervical spondylosis?
It is age-related wear and tear of the discs and small joints in your neck (the cervical spine). Discs lose height, and bone spurs can form. Many people have it without symptoms; others get neck pain, stiffness, or arm symptoms when nerves are pressed.
Can cervical spondylosis be treated without surgery?
Yes. Most people improve with non-surgical care such as physiotherapy, posture correction, medication for flare-ups and, where needed, targeted injections. Surgery is usually considered only when there is serious or worsening pressure on the nerves or spinal cord.
Can it be cured completely?
The wear itself can't be reversed, but symptoms can usually be controlled very well. With the right exercises and habits, many patients stay comfortable and active for years.
Is cervical spondylosis the same as cervical spondylitis?
No. Spondylosis is degenerative wear and tear. Spondylitis means inflammation of the spine, as in ankylosing spondylitis, and is treated differently. The names are often mixed up, so a proper diagnosis matters.
How long does a flare-up of neck pain last?
Many flare-ups settle within a few weeks with rest, physiotherapy and posture changes. If pain lasts longer, keeps returning or spreads into your arms, get it checked so the cause can be treated properly.
Which tests are used to diagnose it?
Diagnosis starts with a physical and nerve examination. X-rays show disc space and bone spurs, and an MRI shows any pressure on nerves or the spinal cord. Nerve conduction tests are sometimes added if arm symptoms are unclear.
